Is Latvia safe for travelers?
Is Latvia safe for travelers? If this question is preoccupying your mind, here is the answer.
We are glad to inform you that it is generally safe to travel around Latvia on your own, but let's take a look at some precautions to consider.
Pocket-picking, minor thefts, disreputable places
As in most countries of the world, some petty crime exists. For example, pickpockets is something you should always keep in mind to ensure you remain the proprietor of your wallet. A thing to watch out for is bicycle theft, and it is advisable not to leave valuable things in your car. Keep away from disreputable places – if you make a little effort and search before your trip, you can always learn where they are located.
Prices in bars and “friendly” inviting strangers
When visiting bars and restaurants, always make sure you know the price before you order a meal or a drink. Always think twice before you follow friendly strangers who strike up a conversation with you in street inviting to a club or bar – it can turn out to be a way of robbing you, and the police are unlikely to help if you get scammed. Yet, don't let this warning make you now full of suspicion against every person who should like to welcome you in Latvia or give assistance in case it is needed.
Animals, reptiles, insects
Latvia is a country where most likely you will never encounter a wild animal hunting for a prey. But still there are a few suggestions you should take into account.
If case you get bitten by a dog, wild animal, snake or tick, seek medical attention immediately.
A dog, cat or wild animal bite can carry the risk of rabies.
The European Adder can be encountered in Latvia - it is a possible death threat if no treatment is received within the next few hours after the bite. Don't mix it with totally harmless black grass snake!
Mosquitoes carry no disease and bring only an annoyance.
Be aware of forest ticks - their bite carries a risk of Lyme disease or encephalitis. If a tick manages to bite you, never try to draw it out yourself, - let the doctor do his job.
We suggest that while enjoying Latvia's nature, you use mosquito and tick repellents that can be easily obtained at any pharmacy.
In case of emergency, please, call 112.
We wish you a safe and pleasant trip!
