Slovenia
With more than half its interior covered with forests, Slovenia is one of the greenest countries in Europe...
Resting between the Alps and the Adriatic and poised above – but not a part of – the Balkan peninsula, Slovenia has been blessed with incredible natural beauty and has welded a great number of outside influences - from Roman and Venetian to Germanic and Hungarian - onto its Slavic core. The result is a physical and cultural alloy that is wholly distinctive and distinctly precious.
Slovenia has been dubbed many things – ‘Europe in Miniature’, ‘The Sunny Side of the Alps’, ‘The Green Piece of Europe’ – and they’re all true. The place abounds in top-notch things to see – stunning mountains, lakes, rivers and a coast of jaw-dropping beauty as well as historic towns and cities with unforgettable architecture, museums and a unique energy all of their own.
Slovenia is a very well-organised outdoor-activities paradise. For adrenaline junkies, the rugged interior offers canoeing, white water rafting, rock climbing, skiing and anything else you can think of doing on mountains.
Slovenia can provide comprehensive health and wellness resorts and thermal spas due to its manifold thermal water springs and mineral water resources. The most celebrated spa resort is Rogaška Slatina.
But Postojna Cave is Slovenia's foremost tourist attraction. It is a very obvious 2 km stroll northwest of unremarkable Postojna town. Inside the cave, impressive stalagmites and stalactites stretch almost endlessly in all directions, as do the chattering crowds who shuffle past them.
