Memorial museum of the extermination victims - Auschwitz-Birkenau
It is on the list of UNESCO's World Heritage. The Nazis set up the concentration camp in Auschwitz in 1942. The biggest Nazi concentration camp on the Polish territory had become also an extermination camp. One and a half million people perished in the camp known to the world as Auschwitz-Birkenau. The majority of the victims were Jews from Poland and Central Europe.
The second largest groups of victims were Poles. During the annual March of the Living thousands of Jews from the whole world and young Poles march from the Auschwitz gate to the martyrdom memorial in Birkenau in order to commemorate victims of the Holocaust.
Wolfs Lair - Hitler's headquarters – Gierłoż
Hitler's headquarters at Gierłoż known as the Wolf's Lair is one of the most sinister places in the region, but it attracts many tourists because of its legendary climate. The fortress is composed of 80 buildings, 50 of them are bunkers. The headquarters had its own electric power generator, railway station and an air -strip. Quarters of the top Nazi officials as well as casino and cinema were located in the central part of the compound. The whole area was camouflaged, protected by wire entanglements and mine fields. Retreating in 1945, the Germans dynamited the fortress. Its ruins are available for visitors.
Longest defensive system worldwide – Międzyrzecz Fortified Region
A complex of wartime fortifications ordered by Hitler and built in 1934-38. Bunkers with steel tops are interconnected by underground corridors and form what is believed to be the longest defensive system worldwide. Guided tours through the underground tunnels are available. Thanks to its microclimate it has become a bat reserve, Nietoperek that offers shelter to approximately 30,000 bats.
Mysterious subterranean city - Osówka and Walim
Excavations of the underground galleries near Os6wka and Gluszyca in the Sowie Mountains began in 1943, most probably in order to set up there a factory of Hitler's secret weapons. Approximately 1,700 meters of a subterranean trail consisting of passages and caverns can be visited. An exhibition related to Hitler's various headquarters and the Third Reich's subterranean factories of weaponry was arranged under the ground.
